The Yadkin Arts Council’s “Art A La Carte Experience” is a weeklong series of art classes taught by Yadkin Arts Council Artist Members. These “sampler sessions” will offer attendees the opportunity to explore their creative outlets and try out different art mediums by selecting from a menu of options. Each session will run 2 to 3 hours and all supplies will be provided.  Thanks to the generous support of the Shallow Ford Foundation, admission to these classes is only $15 each (each class has a $35 to $75 value)

Registration is open to students 16 years of age and older.

All Classes will take place at the Mary Alice Warren Community Center (7632 Warren Pk Dr, Lewisville, NC 27023)

Pop Art Portraits

Instructor: Lisa Drum

Monday 8/7/23 (9am-12pm)

Immortalize your favorite person or pet with a hip and cool portrait! In this easy Pop Art Class, you will create TWO fun and unique 8″ x 10″ portraits using mixed media of photocopies, paint and colored papers. You can create two contrasting pieces of the same photo (ala Andy Warhol) OR create two totally unique masterpieces using different photos. Lisa Drum will turn your submitted photo(s) into black art on colored copier papers. Then in class you will paint a fun background for each portrait before cutting out your portrait photocopies and affixing them to the background. Final step will be adding a protective topcoat.

Bird Nest Necklaces

Instructor: Susan Fulcher

“Birds in flight” – In this whimsical workshop, you will learn to weave wire into a miniature bird nest to be worn as a necklace with the addition of pearl eggs. As a bonus you will have a chance to create a series of paper birds inspired by your necklace.

Intro to Resin Art

Instructor: Sarah Smith

Monday 8/7/23 (1-4pm)

 

**THIS CLASS IS FULL**

This class will offer participants an introduction to the fun world of Resin Art. You will learn the all sorts of techniques and more importantly what not to do when working with epoxy resin. Each student will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of silicone molds to create their very own pendants, key chains, and paper weights. All supplies and materials will be included. The art created in this class will need to cure for at least 24-48 hours before you will be able to take them home.

Collage Workshop

Instructor: Valerie Oberle

Monday 8/7/23 (1-4pm)

The workshop on collage art is an interactive learning experience where participants get hands-on training in creating unique pieces of art using different types of paper and other materials. During the workshop, Valerie introduces various techniques and ideas related to collage art and shows participants how to incorporate shapes, colors, and texture to create visually appealing collages. And you might be surprised at some of the materials used!

Beginning Quilling - Flowers, Hearts, and Flourishes

Tuesday 8/8/23 (9am-12pm)

In this class, you will learn the art of quilling paper; creating beautiful flowers, shapes, and decorative flourishes, for one-of-a-kind cards and frame-able art. Students will learn basic quilling techniques of rolling, shaping and gluing paper strips together to create up to three 5” x 7” cards with envelopes or ready to frame pieces. The quilling tool and mini-glue bottle will be yours to keep!

Alcohol Ink Workshop

Instructor: Valerie Oberle

Working with Alcohol Inks can be so unexpected, fun, tricky, amazing, cool and so much more! In this workshop you will learn all about the process of using alcohol inks including the safety precautions, techniques, and color mixing.

Small Watercolor Painting Techniques

Instructor: Sam Stitcher

Tuesday 8/8/23 (1-4pm)

This class will explore techniques, methods, topics and applications for watercolor paintings in sizes from 3×5 to 5×7. This size painting is great for Christmas, birthday, and other greeting cards. Also, it is good for tabletop paintings or where small paintings are good for walls. We will work in line and wash, loose, and other styles. Paper, ink, brushes, and other supplies will be supplied. A minimum knowledge of watercolor painting is recommended, but not required.

Mod Podge Treasure Boxes

Tuesday 8/8/23 (1-4pm)

Everyone loves a treasure box, why not make your own?! In this class we will go over collaging techniques to create your very own keepsake box. Materials will be provided but feel free to bring any of your mementos to make your box extra special!

Intro to Photography

Instructor: Hannah Morris

Wednesday 8/9/23 (9am-12pm)

This class will go over the basics of photography including how your camera works, correct techniques, and camera settings. Hannah will give you her top five tips for framing up great photos, covering everything from rule of thirds and leading lines to what to look for in a background and more!

Chalk Pastels

Instructor: Bill Gramley

Wednesday 8/9/23 (10am-12pm)

Create Vibrant seascapes, autumn forests, and fruit using pastels. No experience required! You should be able to do 3 or 4 small pictures on a variety of scenes and enjoy the colorful results framed!

Learn the Magic of Organic Cyanotype Printing

Instructor: Valerie Oberle

Wednesday 8/9/23 (1-4pm)

Learn the old-time art of printing with sunlight! Today’s methods use a chemical set for Cyanotype printing by painting this mixture on heavy 9×11 watercolor paper, which will be pre-done before class. Participants will create a design using pressed ferns, leaves and other items supplied. After pressing under glass and leaving in the sun for 20 minutes or so, the magic begins to happen! Learn about various chemicals and household items that enhance your design and colors.

Needle-felted Cardinal Christmas Ornament

Needle-felt a unique Christmas ornament from wool. No prior needle-felting experience required.

Introduction to Colored Pencils as a Fine Art Medium

Thursday 8/10/23 (9am-12pm)

Ready to take your artwork with colored pencils up a notch? Perhaps you’ve tried adult coloring books, or you’re just ready to unleash your inner artist! Then join Susan Morris, colored pencil artist and instructor, as she unveils her love for colored pencil medium. In this class, you will learn about artist-grade colored pencils, techniques/strokes used, and basic information to give you a starting foundation as a colored pencil artist.

Water Lillies: Intro to Gel Plate Printing

Create a painting of Water Lillies using one-of-a-kind hand printed papers. You will learn how to make several prints to incorporate into this collage. This class (taught in one 3- hour session) is a great way to loosen up and get your creativity flowing…regardless of whether you have painted for years or never picked up a paintbrush. All materials are provided.

Create One-of-a-Kind Note Cards with Colored Pencils

Thursday 8/10/23 (1-4pm)

In this day of technology, it is easy to send a quick email to friends and family. But everyone still loves and appreciates receiving a note card in their mail. Imagine sending an extra-special and unique card created by you to someone close. Creating these mini-artwork note cards is surprisingly easy when you start with a stamped card enhanced and decorated with colored pencils. Join Susan Morris as she shows you how! Each participant will complete 2 note cards in class and leave with a set of pencils and accessories to complete more cards on their own. Additional stamped note cards will be available for purchase at the end of class.

A Taste of Gold: Intro to Gold Leaf and Acrylic Painting

Gold leaf has been used for centuries as both a component and surface background for works of art—from the earliest examples of iconography & 18th c Peruvian painters to Gustav Klimt and the modern day works of contemporary artists. Students will create a 9 x 12 painting using gold metal leaf as a background and acrylic paint for the subject. This introductory class will cover the basic gilding process using gold metal leaf as a way to enhance any painting. (paintings will be completed or near completion by end of class)

Printmaking Postcards

Instructor: Logan Greenlee

Friday 8/11/23 (9am-12pm)

This beginners printmaking class will guide students through the relief printing process. Students will design their own printing blocks and use them to create handmade postcards.

Wet Felted Rock Doorstop

Instructor: Judy Wilson

Friday 8/11/23 (1-4pm)

Learn wet felting techniques to felt wool around a real rock to make a door stop or decorative piece. You will learn a few additional needle felting techniques to add detail. No experience is required but wet felting experience is a plus. Must be able to stand and work the wool in warm sudsy water and handle the weight of the rock (no more than a couple of pounds). Please bring a large towel.

Printmaking Tea Towels

Instructor: Logan Greenlee

Friday 8/11/23 (1-4pm)

This beginners printmaking class will guide students through the relief printing process. Students will design their own printing blocks and use them to create handmade tea towels.
