The Yadkin Arts Council’s “Art A La Carte Experience” is a weeklong series of art classes taught by Yadkin Arts Council Artist Members. These “sampler sessions” will offer attendees the opportunity to explore their creative outlets and try out different art mediums by selecting from a menu of options. Each session will run 2 to 3 hours and all supplies will be provided.  Thanks to the generous support of the Shallow Ford Foundation, admission to these classes is only $15 each (each class has a $30 to $45 value)

Registration is open to students 16 years of age and older. Children ages 12 to 15 may sign up but must be accompanied by a paying adult. 

All Classes will take place at the Mary Alice Warren Community Center (7632 Warren Pk Dr, Lewisville, NC 27023)

Beginning Quilling

Instructor: Lisa Drum

In this class, you will learn the art of quilling paper; creating beautiful flowers, shapes, and decorative flourishes, for one-of-a-kind cards and frame-able art. Students will learn basic quilling techniques of rolling, shaping and gluing paper strips together to create up to three 5” x 7” cards with envelopes or ready to frame pieces. The quilling tool and mini-glue bottle will be yours to keep!

Learn to Use Pastels

Create Vibrant seascapes, autumn forests, and fruit using pastels. No experience required!

Hand-Dyed Silk Scarves

Learn a fast and easy silk dyeing technique to create a beautiful one-of-a-kind silk scarf. This class will teach you to dye silk using Wilton Gel Icing Dyes. Class includes one 11″ x 11″ Habotai silk handkerchief (to practice dyeing techniques) and one 11″ x 72″ hand rolled hem Habotai silk scarf. Students will be able to try techniques and test colors on silk handkerchief before creating a scarf. Students may purchase one additional scarf during class to dye at $15.00 per scarf (various sizes available).

Alcohol Ink Workshop

Working with Alcohol Inks can be so unexpected, fun, tricky, amazing, cool and so much more! In this workshop you will learn all about the process of using alcohol inks including the safety precautions, techniques, and color mixing.

Express Yourself using Paint & Music

Instructor: Joan Means

This class will allow you to explore your creativity while listening to music and being inspired by what you hear. YOU will be motivated by the sounds to express your impressions. Using the art tools and medium provided, YOU can make marks and brush strokes on paper, board and canvas to create your art. The different patterns in the music will give YOU imaginative inspiration for EXPRESSIVE design.

Fun Florals with Pastels

Instructor: Laurie Basham

Laurie will guide you in an exploration of energetic and intuitive mark making with pastels to create a lively floral painting. Photo references will be provided or bring your own.

Collage Class

Instructor: Terry Hancock

This collage class is for anyone who loves putting ideas together with glue and pictures. Collage uses paper paint pencils glue stencils and other objects as building blocks to create a layered art piece. The class will teach you how to plan, place and create a story and art with paint cut outs and bits of paper that will make a complete picture. The class starts with prepping the canvas with a painted background. While that dries we will determine your stories and select the building blocks for your collage. Once chosen, we will place the pieces on your canvas. This can be a funny, pretty, floral or abstract piece.

Take Better Pictures

Instructor: Bryan Rierson

This class will help you to take control of your camera. Modern digital cameras have a plethora of controls and features- so many it can be overwhelming! Learn the basics of photography and some simple techniques to use with your camera to take better pictures.

Wet Felting a Picture

Instructor: Judy Wilson

Wednesday 8/10/22 (1-4pm)

Learn the basics of creating a wet-felted wool painting by laying your colored wools and other fibers such as silk onto a base of wool to create your painting. There will be some basic needle-felting involved to tack down the fibers as well before wet-felting. Warm, soapy water will be used to wet down the painting. It will then be hand-rubbed and rolled to “felt” your painting. You may keep for framing when dry or mount onto paper stock to create a greeting card.

Make a Mosaic Mirror

Instructor: Jody Pounds

Jody will take you through the process of creating a stained glass mosaic on a mirror base. When completed, you will have a piece that you can attach a hanger to for the wall, display on an easel, or leave as is and set on a table or your desk.

Introduction to Gelli Plate Printing

Instructor: Beth Andrews

PART 1:

Learn how to create one-of-a-kind prints using Gelli plates. This process is a great way to loosen up and get your creativity flowing…regardless of whether you have painted for years or never picked up a paintbrush. All materials are provided. Each participant will be able make original prints which they can use later in various kinds of art projects.

PART 2:

This class provides techniques and instructions in how to use Gelli monoprints. All materials are provided. Each participant will be able to create a finished mixed media pieces using the prints created in part 1.

*These are two separate classes. Students may sign up for part 1 only if they prefer, but students must take part 1 in order to take part 2

Needle Felted Gnome

Instructor: Judy Wilson

Friday 8/12/22 (1-4pm)

Learn basic needle-felting skills to create a wool, needle-felted Gnome. Using a barbed needle designed specifically for needle-felting you will create a basic Gnome shape and then layer on the colored wool and accessories to design the Gnome of your choice. You can designate your design in advance for a holiday Gnome, seascape Gnome, or your favorite sports team.
